Why playing hooky would have been better.

I have one of those teachers that just manages to stress me out, through no fault of his own. Well that is a blatant lie, I just can't stand the man and I abhor the way he teaches. Does he truly believe that any one will retain the last thing he teaches especially when it's already past 5:30, and most of us are about ready to go home? I'm sorry sir but that last minute "let me just go over this quickly because you need to know it" is not going to stay with us a second past the door. Does he honestly not know that most people's attention spans wane after 30 minutes? The man talks for hours, literally. The first 1.5 hours of the lecture was spent listening to him jabber on about the program as he attempted to point out the various aspects. As I understand it, a general rule of thumb when teaching anything with an application is that the person actually has work with the program instead of watching someone else do it!
GAH! I am just so frustrated with this teacher. The last time I took a class with him I didn't show up for the last half of the semester. The worst part is I think he knows how much I actually dislike him. Which makes me feel bad because I am pretty sure that he is not that bad of a person, it's just the way he teaches and his need to inflate his ego by rambling on about how great he is! I think I'll end this rant here else I'll just go on for pages.
I did mange to learn a thing or two today unfortunately none of it was related to class material, but I've learnt a few more JAVA tricks and some more HTML coding. Thank god for in class internet access. [shaking head] I am a bad, bad student. [sigh]

Munin: Hungry [sits down in front of computer to blog]
Hugin: [putting books away on shelves, curiously named something related to `book' and `shelf' combined, calls out]: Can you put the pie in the oven?
Munin: [continuing to blog]
Hugin: [now on some other minor organizational facet of a very large and somewhat messy diamond, calls out]: Can you put the pie in the oven?
Munin: [two guesses... nope, she continues to blog]
Hugin: [takes hint and puts pie in the oven]
Munin: [denies all knowledge of the aforementioned... except for the blogging part, which she continues to do, and justifies this with]: At least one of us posts.
Hugin: [posts]

[[Munin - I feel so bad, in my defense though I honestly did not hear him.

[[Addendum - true though, we wants more posting out of you! [very impish smile]]

Bloggie Awards.

Congratz to all those were who nominated and all those who won, all your pages are indeed worthy of an award! Now the rant; as much as I agree that WC page is well done, but don't you think that was just a little bit of over kill? I mean, maybe its just me, but 6 awards is a bit much. I could probably understand 1 or 2 of 'em but six. Here I thought that some of the other pages had more original content and were more worthy of awards. Then again, this is just the opinion of one slightly biased person...

We got the fishes!!! We got the fishes

Finally after many weeks of prepping, setting up of the aquarium, adjusting and tweaking we have gotten 6 fishes. WE were going to get 5, but the sixth one looked so cute and forlorn that we couldn't just leave her [assuming it's female] there. We would like to thank Candi, who is just an amazing gal, for all the advice that she has given us. We did say that she's amazing didn't we? Good.
Now we just have to see how the fishes will fair.

[we should be posting some pictures of their new digs soon!]

Question of the day:

Do I go to class or do I stay at home, drink copious amounts of coffee and play with the site redesign?
[Personally, I'm all for staying at home today. I want to play! I wanna learn more fun stuff, more HTML and maybe delve into MT. Oh Fa'KIT! [grumble] Have to hand in an assignment. [A disgruntled Munin slinks away from the 'puter]]

Monday Mission:
posted just a wee bit earlier this time. :)

1. My Grandmother makes the best pun'kin pie (my fave pie, btw), and anyone else's is just not the same. What dish/dessert does someone make that has spoiled you on all others who attempt to make it?
That would have to be the chocolate cake that an old flatmates of mine mother use to make. I haven't yet found it's equal, it was rich, moist and filled with chocolate yumminess. I think she used chocolate pudding in her recipe but am an not sure.
2. What was that last argument about, the one where you got so upset and said all those things?
There was one with my mom a while back when. A few things needed to be said, and now that they have we have gained a better understanding of each other.
3. For me, I can't start the day without a shower. It is my peaceful time of the day, and it is my "coffee." Until someone bangs on the door saying "save some hot water for me!" What is the one thing you do for yourself that is personal and relaxing, and can be totally ruined if you are interrupted.
Sitting by any body of water, in the city that would be the fountain in the park in the woods that would be near a lake perched on a rock. I find water to be a very calming medium. Just sitting watching the sunlight play on the water, watching as ripples form and disperse centers me somehow. If I can't find a fountain a bath is the next best thing.
4. Who is one person you can always count on?
I am quite lucky because there are a few people who I can count on. Hugin, my mom and dad, my siblings and a few very close friends who have been there throughout.
5. Have you ever thought it couldn't get any worse, and then it does?
Yes.
6. When was the last time you used (or were told) the line "I love you, but I'm not in love with you."
A while back and it hurt so very much to say.
7. This is a great table you found, right on the patio overlooking the water. The sun is setting and the reflection looks amazing. Time almost stands still and all worries are gone. For just a moment, everything is perfect. When was the last time you had that a feeling like that?
Sitting by a fountain with Hugin.
BONUS: If I could be like that, what would I do?
Nope, no flashes of insight here.

Rubik Envy .

Watched a classmate solve Rubik's cube in less then 2 minutes!! He did this twice in a row! I am so bloody envious, in all my years I have only managed to match up two faces on the cube. Makes me want to go out and buy one so I can perhaps one day master it. Want to see how you do, give rubik cube a whirl.

Sobering Thoughts

Went for breakfast with my mom today, it had been two weeks since I've seen her and we got to catch up and spend some time together. Though the experience was pleasurable it was also sobering.

My mom has reached an age where she no longer wants to do contract work; she would like a job with stability. She has worked as an architect and interior designer for more then 30 years, this has given her some rather interesting views on life especialy on how one should deal with construction workers, but it has also taken its toll. She is now looking for a full time job which will offer her security and benefits, this is hard for a woman her age, especially one with her experience. It seems that companies do not care to hire womem in their 50's, nor do they seem to want to hire people with 30 years of experience. The latter is because they have to pay more for an experienced person and the former because it means a pension plan which in the long run means they have to dish out more money. These are some of the reasons that have actually been given to my mom.

The sobering moment came when my mom asked me, where she is going to land up 10 to 15 years down the road. I honestly did not know what to tell her. I wish I could say that she would be ok, that she will have a job she loves and a place to live. I wish I could tell her that she would have no worries. But in this day and age I can't. It's hard to see the person who raised you by herself, who was the rock in your universe as a child be so defeated. It's hard to watch the tears form in her eyes when she considers her future and sees no real set goal or plan. My mom would love to be able to go back to school and study something new, but then she questions what will she gain from this endeavor. I wish I could tell her to go for it no matter what the consequences, but every time I do, the same old fears crop up for her. Will she be able to afford it, how will she support herself. I've also tried suggesting that she try finding work on an international scale. But she fears doing this as well as she does not believe that she has the strength to move from a familiar place at her age, that it is easier to do this when you are young. Another sobering thought, especially from my mom, who has lived on three separate continents in four different countries. A woman who packed her bags when she was 19 to leave her native country and who then packed up her daughter and herself to move to an unknown country.

It make me wonder what my fears will be when I am older, what I will able to accomplish, where my life will lead me. Will I land up working in a company for 20 years only to be laid off with no transferable skills? Will I have a home? Will I have made the right decisions? Will my family be ok? It is also left me with a sense of how lucky I am. I have an incredible mother who taught me many things and who did her best to give me the things that she never got as a child, for that I am truly grateful. Though she is going to be a hard act to follow when I have kids. I have a loving family and a group of caring friends, there is someone in my life who loves me and who is there to support me. I have hopefully many years ahead of me to experience life, to make mistakes and to hopefully succeed. Hopefully one day, I will be able to give back to my mom what she has given me.

Have had some rather sobering discussions today, one with my mom and another with Hugin. Many thoughts, points of views and ideas to think on not much for posting them now, will do so later when they have had time to settle and I can write them down in a linear fashion without bouncing from one notion to the other. Though this will probably happen anyways, I guess I am just not completely up to posting right now. Perhaps a little later...

SLD2

Silly movie, late breakfast and Diablo II, pretty much sums up how yesterday was spent. None of us made it up till after 1:00 [some later then others ;)][[Not me! -Hugin]] which meant breakfast was a late affair consisting of pancakes, eggs, sausages, toast, cheese, juice and lots of coffee! We never did finish putting up the ceiling lamp though surprisingly enough the landlord did show up, he rang the doorbell at 10 o'clock. [It's SUNDAY morning for Christ sake, most people are still abed!] We never called him back to shut off the electricity, so this time it's our fault; hopefully we'll be able to catch him again sometime this week. Asides it was past 4:00 when we finished eating breakfast, and the daylight was slowly fading. I don't think we would have had the time to put up the fixture. [Procrastination rears ugly head and speaks] Demolition Man was the silly movie for the night. As cheesy as this movie may be I still enjoy watching it. It's just one of those movies that you can sit in front of and vegetate. As for Diablo, I seriously need a new fix! I still enjoy playing the game, but there must be something else out there that could be as much fun. Anyone got any suggestions?

Lights! Er... perhaps not.

What was thought to take only five minutes is going to take the rest of the weekend. We managed to get the old fixture down with no problems but installing the new one is going to take a little bit more work. Our flat has been around for a while, which means that we've got some really old wiring running through the building. The electrical box is also quiet ancient and has no clearing for the connecting rod that supports the lamp. Our flatmates who has been kind enough to offer his help in installing the lamp [he's the tallest of the bunch] has also managed to electrocute himself twice in an attempt to connect the wires. So the fixture now awaits the pleasure of our landlord, who is the only one who can pull the breaker for our floor. [The breaker is tucked away in the basement, where he lives] Which means that we shall have no light in our room until the first.

Just a good old relaxing Saturday. Nothing much a doing, hanging around playing on computer. Ate a late breakfast. Going to go and change the light fixture in our bedroom soonish and after that, well who knows might just go and veg out on the couch and watch a movie or two!!

Being the kind of person I am, and having been annoyed by all of the terrible things I had heard about Fellowship of the Ring I didn't want to see it.
So, now I have seen it twice and was not as annoyed by what they had done. But following that line of thought it occured to me I should post some movie reviews not based on things that were good, but things that annoyed, called my Snap Reviews in honor of how many times a movie made me snappy.
So with that in mind, I hereby rate Fellowship of the Ring as a Three Snap movie. That's right, three. Of course as there are no other movies on my list, that doesn't mean much... Hmm... Ok, how about this then, my second opinion will be of The One, snap rating of two.
Does that mean one is better than the other, certainly not, it just means that more things obviously made me snappy about Fellowship.
Does it mean anything to you? Nah... I suppose it could cause a discussion if I gave reasons... hmm... but that might start taking up an entire website on its own.
So, that's all for now from Snappy Hugin.

Simply Senile

Hugin has an amazing selection of songs on his computer. Every now and again one will play that I will absolutely love. So being the inquisitive creature that I am I'll barrage him with a ton of questions asking him, which song he's listening to, who the artist is, what album the song is from and where he found it. Turns out, that with the exception of one song they have all been pilfered off my computer. Do I ever feel sheepish. Senility has managed to sneak up on me at some point and has made itself at home. [wondering aimlessly about, 'does this belong to me?'][[No, it's mine! ;) - Hugin]]

Heathers Friday Five!

1. What cologne or perfume do you wear? Don't generally wear perfume, have a few lightly scented creams that I use. When I wear perfume, I like Oscar de la Renta, it has a light orangey scent that I enjoy.
2. What cologne or perfume do you like best on the opposite sex? Occasionally Old Spice, though I think that's because my dad use to wear it and the smell reminds me of him. Occasionally aqua velva if it hasn't been ladled on, I know that's a weird one. Light spicy or citrine scents are the ones I seem to enjoy on someone else.
3. What one smell can you not stomach? Anything that is too sweet or cloying, so I guess old musty roses would fall under this category.
4. What smell do you like that others might consider weird? The smell of gasoline, black liquorice, and especially cinnamon. Go slightly nuts over the smell of cinnamon.
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Few light renovations need to be done about the house. Installing a new light fixture in our bedroom as the old one is scary. The lightbulbs tend to crack when you replace them. Then the usual, sleeping in, snuggling, and computer games, must stop playing Diablo 2 need a new fix!

Question of the Day.

What do x-presidents do once they have served their term in office? Do they get a job or is there a retirement fund? Are they ambassadors? Do they join the work force again or do they find some dark dank corner and hide out in it? It could be that some of them are well to do and could probably sustain themselves without any further aid. But what about the rest, what do they do? Can anyone tell me?

Am dreading class today. Do not want to go. No Siree Bob. Just can't handle sitting on class for 4 hours with that teacher. Nope ain't going to do it. You can't make me. It's not that he's a bad man, it's just that he doesn't know how to teach, nor is he familiar with the course material though he's been teaching the same class for 10 years. In addition to that he just loves going on about himself. I am sorry sir but the class is not entitled 'The Life and Fast Times of Teacher X.' So I am not going to class today!! I am going to sit here all day and play on the computer. Well OK, maybe I'll just sneak in momentarily pick up the class outline see if I can get my hands on all the exercises and teach the class to myself.

Casualties of a caffeine deprived brain

Class can be a funny thing when your brain's not functioning at a 100%. What I heard in class today 'drink the scotch.' Perked up as soon as I heard that, was ready to partake in the festivities when I realized that what I heard had nothing to do with what was being taught. What the teacher actually said, 'find the scotch yoke and calculate the velocity. Sigh, perhaps next time.

Slightly Delayed Monday Mission [or should we say very delayed ]

1. What was the most romantic moment you remember from last year?
I am a sap, so to me there has been many a romantic moment in the past year. I just can't pull one out of the bunch and say that it was the most romantic moment. Most moments spent with Hugin, when we are snuggled up together, or walking in the snow, drinking coffee in a café, reading books together, are all quite romantic.
2. What is your most recent obsession?
Several obsessions have recently cropped up. DVDs have become a new obsession, especially the special editions. Blogs, I can safely say I am now addicted to reading them on a daily basis. [wry shaking of head] Books, well those have always been an obsession. I love collecting and reading books.
3. One of my favorite things in the world is to watch the sunset/sunrise, although rainbows are a close second. Tell me about your favorite natural occurrence?
Sitting on a sandy beach, listening to the tide, and star gazing. Though watching the sun rise or set near water is something else I love to see. Rainbows, and walks in the woods are very close seconds.
4. I've always been told bad things come in "threes." I really don't believe in the rule of the "threes," but have you had some experiences where it has proved to be true?
Yes, I think it was my second year of University, didn't do well, got put on probation, parents' got divorced and ended a 5-year relationship. It does also work on the flip side too, sometimes good things come in threes.
5. But then again, I am usually a positive person, takes a lot to "p" me off. Let's talk about good things for a sec. What's the most recent "good news" you have heard?
That my mom is doing well, she has a bit of a rough time recently and it is good to know that things are beginning to look up.
6. I'm not double-jointed and I can't stop a fan-blade with my tongue. But I can curl my tongue as well as cross just one eye. Do you have any stupid human tricks?
My fingers are slightly double jointed, which means that I can bend them back further then 90 degrees. I can curl my tongue, and I can make an O with it and I can twitch my nose, like a bunny does. I used to be able to touch my nose to my knees, but that was centuries ago, and I haven't been able to do it in a while.
7. I have to say, that really was a good movie. It is pretty early still, I think there are some things going on downtown. Anything strike your fancy?
Walking down the streets, stopping somewhere for a coffee or an ice-cream. Watching the people go by, enjoying the view.

BONUS: Who can take a sunrise...sprinkle it with dew?
Now I've got the song running through my mind. Darnit ;) It's going to be there all day. 'who can take a sunrise... sprinkle it with dew? ... The Candy Man can' [unfortunatly the handy man song has popped up right along with it. [sigh]]

Brain Numb.

Nine hours of class today, wasn't expecting that, they usually let us out early on the first day of classes. The good thing is I remembered how to use a milling machine and managed not to lose any fingers. Am pooped, brain's numb and the comfy sofa is calling my name. I think I am going to go and pass out in front of the TV.

...a touch here and there.

Something I definitely want to snag from Candi, who got it from Zal, 'the last 50 peeps that visited.'[found on little green footballs under scripts]

Am also contemplating a site redesign, something simple yet classy, something that is us, and something that is not overkill. Have been pondering the redesign for quiet a few weeks, but so far have gotten no flashes of inspiration. Just drawing random blanks on what can be done to improve our sites look. Am also wondering if I should move from Blogger to Movable Type. Not to sure, am to worried about not being able to get MT up and running properly. [Sigh] We shall see what transpires this weekend. Am gonna sit my ass down and brainstorm.

Got to go! Am late, am late for a very important... Class?!?

Posted by munin at 11:22 AM | Comments (0)

I said that I would post this one-day, and well here it is, a little late. Ok, so it's a few months late, but, umm... I really can't think up any excuse at the moment, so with out further ramblings;

Yet another stab at an over abused invention. The Segway.

So as has been noted on many another page IT or Ginger if you please has made it's debut. Though the specs are cool, and its ability to "read the riders" mind if you will, and mimic equilibrium is phenomenal there is still a note of discord with this product. Though I can see the seqway engraining itself in to some parts of our lives, I have great difficulties with the inventors, that this new vehicle [or gadget] will revolutionize transportation and replace the car for people who live in big cities. As much as I agree with the philosophy of using mass transportation, employing vehicles that are more environmentally friendly I find that there are several problems that I see with this statement. First off who is going to fork over the 3000 plus [8000 for heavy-duty model] to purchase what can be considered to be a high-end scooter? Especially when a good old two wheeler will generally set you back a hundred dollars, if you are not going for the graphite carbon number all spruced up for racing. Secondly can you imagine zipping around on this thing in the middle of a blizzard, or heavy showers? Lastly, how does one drive the kids off to school in this thing? Or go grocery shopping? The only places where I can see this being useful would be in large factories where employees need to get from one building to another or somewhere warm and dry, in a city center used by the average businessperson to get em about town. But even then, the problem of dirt arises when one is wearing a suit.

Woke up yesterday at the ungodly hour of 5:30 to go skiing. Am not sure how we, a friend and I, made it out the door. I think we mostly stumbled through it, grabbing equipment as we ricocheted down the hallway. Nor am I clear on the details of us making it up to the mountain, most of it I was an occasional glimpse through sleep encrusted eyes. I believe that at some point there was coffee, and perhaps a bagel, and then there was a mountain with the sun rising majestically behind it. Quiet a beautiful site, though I do not think I was in the right frame of mind to enjoy it. The only thought running through my mind as we stepped out was 'it's cold, ooh I could go for a nice hot chocolate, a large sofa and blankly and more sleep.'

The skiing turned out to be tons of fun. Another friend and I went x-country skiing, while the rest of our friends went downhill. [Have recently hurt my hip, which means downhill is out, for now] The conditions where absolutely fabulous. The weather was nice and crisp and there had been a substantial amount of snowfall during the past week, so that the trails where fresh. We spent the better part of the morning skiing, got lost along the way, and landed up on a really steep hill that curved downwards. My attempt to get down it standing lasted a tenth of the way, and then I was on my butt slid the rest of the way down. Snow's really cold when it crawls up your jacket! We managed to bag another two hills butt skiing, and then found our way back to the starting point. The afternoon was spent in the ski lodge, with a brief exploratory foray to determine where we had gotten lost. We are still not quiet sure which trial we had landed up on, maybe next time we will be able to figure it out. Headed back home in the evening, conked out as soon as we got home.

Heathers Friday Five.

1. What do you have your browser start page set to? Used to be Google, but has now been changed to BBC Front Page.
2. What are your favorite news sites? There are two actually, BBC and CNN.
3. Favorite search engine? google.
4. When did you first get online? I think it was in 1997, before that used to crawl through BBS.
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Skiing tomorrow, my body has finally forgiven me the torment I put it through two weeks ago. Watching DVD's, reading, playing and snuggling. Tons of snuggling. Maybe going out for a nice brunch on Sunday. Yup that sounds about right no homework, as of yet, so I don't have to worry about studying.

a school'n we will go!

[Yawn] blah blah blah... equation... blah blah blah. One should really not attend an 8:30 class without the fortifications of caffeine. It was a French class and all I came away with was the word `equation'. What do equations have do to with French I ask you. Nothing, I mean granted there are numerous grammatical rules, but I do not believe that any of them follow a specific formula. Do they? Had decided to take a language class, well French, as it has mostly gone unused and has suffered greatly. I can still understand what most people are saying, but please do not ask me to string words into sentence and place it down on paper. What you get will not be intelligible.

The rest of the classes that I shall be attending this semester reside in the domain of science. Physics and math mostly, with an occasional sprinkling of chemistry thrown in at random to confuse the masses, am hoping to come away from those with more then just the word 'equation'.

Well it turned out that this wasn't the day I thought it was and I showed up to school for nothing. Books go on sale tomorrow. Oh well, least I got to walk in the snow. It is quiet lovely outside, big snow flakes are falling down. Great day for making snow angels :)

Loud start to a late day

[Loud jarring sound] Morning? [Groggily checking alarm clock, while hitting snooze button] It can't be morning, I just got to bed. How did that happen? [ill tempered groan, mediocre attempt at getting out of bed ] Nope ain't gonna happen. [snuggling under blankets] [loud jarring begins anew] Grumble! I am not up to this. [nudging Hugin out of bed] [snuggling deeper under blankets, pretending the world doesn't exist] [Phone rings] mummble...Hello? Sorry wrong number... [glance at clock] Shit! That can't be the time! Am late!!! [mad dash out of bed into shower]

Hidden treasure.

Have been going through some boxes that I had stashed away, [and promptly forgotten] at a friend's house for three years. [wry smile] It's amazing what you accumulate over the years. In one box we have found some old notes from college, pages filled with doodles, [Why did I keep those?] and a personality profile that states I am meant to be a nurse. Ha! Fat chance, as I am too afraid of needles! Another box contains some old dishes that I have no use for, and some pots and pans that are now quiet rusty. But the real find was hidden in a box marked 'old school books'. In it we have found my old school books from grades 1 through 3. [Otherwise known at grades 1& 2, Standard 1. As I did my early schooling in Africa]. Most of the copybooks are filled with my early attempts at arithmetic, letters and spelling. One copybook entitled 'My Own Stories', however contains my first endeavors as an author. Here is one of those antiquated stories:

A Storm at Sea
I am off to sea. I am very scared and frightened. I bet you want to know what I do on a boat? Well I normally scrub the deck. There is thunder and I am very scared. The boat is cracked in half, oi.

My teacher at the time thought is was a lovely story. Honestly, it says right there on the page. Lovely!
It's amazing how much simpler our stories were when we were young. We didn't feel the need to embellish them with big words, nor did we try to be fanciful and fill them with too much imagery. We simply stated what we felt and saw. 'I am very scared...the boat is cracked in half.'

... and life still continues apace

Went for an interview this morning, which took 40 minutes to get there and all of 25 minutes to do. [Waiting for person to show up included] The position is for a temporary science teacher with the local adult education center. A good work opportunity and the time constraints will fit in nicely with my school schedule. Their classes run 9am to 12pm, 1:30pm to 4:30pm and then there are the night courses. You can teach when you want, they will basically call you up and see if you are available. The only hiccup is, well as the interviewer put it 'if we called you tomorrow, could you start tomorrow?' Um No! Having no inkling what your scholastic program is like, having not seen the course material or the class structure, I would not feel comfortable walking in, lets say tomorrow, presenting myself to the students and having no further idea of what to do! 'Hmm.' He says, sounding not the least bit impressed and a little concerned. 'When would you be able to start then?' Well, if you could lend me the books, I could review the material and start within a week. He sent me home laden with books, and mumbled something along the lines of, review those we'll do a stage when you are ready, and then we'll see. Does that mean I have a job, or is it more of a chance at a job? [looking somewhat perplexed] Well, I better get a cracking and review the course material.

Monday Mission a little late... [Tuesday already?]

1.What is your favorite hot beverage?
That would definitely have to be a hot Moka. There is something about mixing hot chocolate and coffee, topping it all of with whip cream that is absolutely divine.

2. When meeting a new person you to whom you are physically attracted, what is the first thing you notice about their body?
Eyes and Hands, if visible Tummy. Though the eyes are generally the first thing I will notice and then how they use their hands, structure, and shape. Have a weakness for long fingers.

3. Has somebody ever died before you could say what you needed to say or before conflicts could be resolved?
No. No one that I know of has died before I had wanted to resolve conflicts with them. I generally try to get things sorted out shortly after they occur, do not like holding long grudges with people. The only people I wish I could have gotten to say goodbye to though, would be my great-grand parents and one great aunt whom I was very close to.

4. Name you favorite 80's* Teen movie(s) and why?
(* or the decade of your youth)

That's a hard one. I could say "Ferris Beullers Day Off" as I really enjoyed that movie. Though there are many other movies I enjoyed, St-Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club.

5. What was the best year of your life?
There hasn't been one specific year that I could consider being the best year of my life. There have however been many precious moments scattered throughout the years that have made my life wonderful.

6. What was the worst year of your life? Second year of University when the most bad seem to have happen. Did poorly at school, ended a long term relationship, problems at home at work. You name it, it went wrong.

7. Well, here we are ready for another night out on the town. This time, let's head out to a movie first. Which one should we go see?
Just one, that is makes it harder to choose. How about the 'Usual Suspects', or if something more current is reuiered, how about 'Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings' or 'Monsters Inc.'

BONUS: Are we not men?
Why do I feel like this belongs in a Shakespearean movie, but am not sure. Anyone got any ideas?

School is all a sorted out and was surprised to see that the long line-ups were no longer. The whole process took about 40 minutes, payment and new ID card included. I had managed to loose my old ID card back somewhere 2 years ago and have been without one since. [I am not posting that picture up here, as it s a regular Mug shot and I look like I just robbed a bank] So life continues apace, next we finds a job and then we shall go out and splurge

Must get cracking and get the ball a rolling!

Awe for crying out loud! I just found my active PIN number for school, which means I could have avoided the long line-ups today! [GRUMBLE]. What a silly goose I am!

If thought was a colour, what colour would it be? How about memory?
I would think of course that it would depend upon the type of thoughts, and subjects of memory, etc.
Nothing new there... oh well, that thought gets yellow carded.

Seven Vices of Highly Creative People

I consider myself to be a pseudo creative person occasionally, which is to say that on some rare occasion I am not a complete bore and can spin a lively yarn or two to entertain the masses. Needing some comfort and some form of guideline I have stumbled upon this article. '7 Vices of highly Creative People'

The 7 vices are listed as such:

Vice one: Be a drinker - I do not know if this is something I can truly accomplish as I am not fond of much drink, and have not yet been tempted by the taste of beer. Blasphemous considering my training, my fellow classmates and coworkers have pointed out on several inebriated occasions that drinking is the right of any engineer, as we work hard and hence need to play hard. Mayhap one day I'll find the drink I can thrive on.

Vice Two: Begin with a Smoke - Don't like cigarette smoke much so this one is probably right out. On second thought, I do so enjoy the smell of pipe. [This has been attributed to the fact that me mom started her smoking career with a pipe.] I wonder if inhaling large quantities of pipe smoke would fall under 'beginning with a smoke' I doubt it, and I don't think that I'd be able to keep up this vice for long, aside hacking behind someone's back as you draw in their smoke might be considered bad form.

Vice Three: Put Gambling First - All right this is definitely out. I do not have what people term as a 'poker face' I suck at playing cards, and bluffing people out of their money. As for dice, snake eyes it has and will always be so no gambling for me honey.
Gambling in life, done that, been there, have the T-shirt it reads ' Ya took the wrong road honey, the gold is stashed on the other side under the spot marked X. ' Ok, you got me I am exaggerating, I have gambled in life though I have been shit scared on occasion. It has served me well and I have had my losses, but life is an adventure and you need to gamble once in a while.

Vice Four: Think Oysters - Now I know what some of you are thinking 'Oysters, you got to be out of our mind, they are cholesterol [about 55mg per] filled icky thingies.' The next thought would probably be [well it was mine] 'Oysters, how can they contribute to my creativeness?' Well I am not quiet sure, but if it helps, well who am I to argue? Oysters away!

Vice Five: Seek Fashion First, Then seek to be Understood - I am not sure I fully understand this one as I have no fashion sense and my wardrobe seems to have adopted black as its mascot color. Several close friends are now concerned and have started handing me colorful accessories. [Almost got an orange scarf this Christmas] They say it brings out some color in me cheeks but I disbelieve.

Vice Six: Sex - Enough said, this is site is rated G and I shall not go into the sordid details of my existing [pensive look] or is it non-existent sex life, [impish smile] perhaps another time when I am feeling somewhat bolder and more expressive.

Vice Seven: Abuse the card - Unfortunately I have recently snipped my credit card into 'itty bitty little pieces, as it had been quiet naughty and had gone on a spending spree without consulting me. Having been a recent student and having had to sometimes survive on credit, while waiting for loans to come in, I have since vowed not to let that habit reoccur. It is way to stressful dealing with the creditors who hound you on a daily basis demanding that they be paid back. Especially when all you can say is,' I am waiting for my loan/bursary/scholarship to come in, and I needed to pay tuition so that I may attend classes and so that I can pass my exams and graduate one day soon so I can pay you back.' Much prefer purchases that do not come back to haunt me.

Their conclusion does hit the nail on the head though '...If anyone should still be left unconvinced on the benefits of pursuing these vices, let us remember these sage words of Abraham Lincoln "It has been my experience that those with no vices have very few virtues." ...'

Well that's that, hopefully one day these vices would have worked their magic and I'll be able to say with grand confidence, 'Yes I am quiet creative Sir, sit down awhile and I shall tell you a tale the likes of which you have never heard.' That or I'll just be the raging alcoholic who lives next door to you. Ranting away in a mad stupor, sex offenders [the ones you hire] at my door, Ciggi dangling from me lips, dolled up in century old clothing, lace at my throat, stiletto heels, ace up my sleeve and an over active credit card.

Seriously though go read the article, as it is quiet good.

As an aside; what are your creative vices?
What vices do you use to start 'em creative juices flowing? Mine are occasionally that of boredom and procrastination. I will sit and stare at nothing for a while, the TV seems to be a good venue for this, until I am bored out of my mind and the need to do something creative and productive arises. This generally results in a flurry of events all done in a whirlwind of activities as I try to accomplish several things at the same time.

Resolutions...

It's the middle of January and I am finally posting this. [I must admit there are times when I do tend to procrastinate a little too much] I didn't make any new years resolutions this year, though there seems to be a list of goals, and challenges that I would like to accomplish. Travelling to someplace unknown, getting back to hiking and climbing, creating something artistic, finishing off at least one of the two degrees that I have started. Enjoying those simple precious moments in life by not worrying so much about the 'what ifs', and as someone else put it 'living as only we can and somewhere in 2002 surprising ourselves'

Does that fall under the definition of a resolution, I am not quiet sure, as they are not things that I am striving to accomplish at all costs nor are they things that I am trying to weed out of my personality, bad habits etc. Maybe that is the definition of setting resolution, is to set goals and challenges that you want to accomplish. Hmm? Perhaps a look at the trusty dictionary will solve this dilemma.
According to the Miriam-Webster Online dictionary the word resolution is defined as follows:
3 a : something that is resolved (made a resolution to mend my ways)

Not quiet what I am looking for, so I will keep this as a list of goals and challenges that I want to accomplish with a wonderful adventure thrown in occasionally to keep life interesting.

Heather's Friday Five

1. What was your first job? Aside from babysitting, which started when I was 12, I got my real first job when I was 16 and working as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at our local YMCA. The teaching was fun, the life guarding more stressful as we had a lot of elderly patrons who enjoyed diving into the pool at the deep end and not resurfacing for several moments. We would all be lined up at the side of the pool, hoping against hope that we would not have to dive into the pool and rescue them from the onset of a heart attack. [which is a very grim thought when you're sixteen!]

2. How old were you when you had your first kiss? First peck I believe I was 5, when I was in nursery school. Was very smitten by the boy, according to my mom and went so far as to have a mock wedding. First real kiss when I was 18 away at summer camp. We both had braces.

3. What was your first car? What happened to it? The first car I drove was my mom's old Datsun-Nissan 310. Fun car to drive, as it was small, had some oomph and could fit neatly into the tiniest of parking spots. Aside from that never owned my own car, as the public transportation in this neck of the world is rather good. Perhaps one day I will purchase one, though I would much prefer a Cessna. Do you know you can pick up a pretty decent secondhand plane for only 15 grand, which is cheaper, then some cars.

4. What was your first concert? Rush, "Roll the Bones" concert with my first serious boyfriend.[Which is funny considering I am not a Rush fan]

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Much of the same as this week, organize study, do laundry, clean up house. Maybe go see a movie this weekend, perhaps a little cross-country skiing and lots of snuggling!

School starts next week!!!

Gah! How the heck did that happen? I was convinced I had another week of holidays coming. So I am currently running around trying to get everything sorted. This includes registering for those last minute classes, seeing if I have enough stationary to last me the semester and coordinating a work schedule around school and then convincing someone that this can work so they'll hire me. 'Honestly I don't need sleep sir, I can study during the wee hours of the morning, just please, please let me work for you while I study, it's the last degree honest!' [Was recently laid off, as my position was no longer viable and our office seems to be dying. This is sad because I really enjoyed what I did. Am hoping that one day I'll be able to find a position doing the same type of work. Anyone need a Technical Trainer?] Also have to clear out a place to study and dig out some of the old textbooks, as I am positive that they are going to be used as reference. Now where did I put that box? Dagnahbit
Oh grumble, as if things couldn't possibly be less organized, my PIN is now no longer valid which means that I can no longer register for those courses online! I now have to go wait in line and plead with the registration officers to please let me into the courses as I desperately need them to graduate. Well wish me luck, I am off.
[running around aimlessly. a chicken without a head]

C++ in 21 days!

So have decided that it about time that I join the new millennium and learn C++. My previous programming experience has been with the trusty if dated Fortran. Having gotten that notion in mind I have purchased SAMS "Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days". I am not sure if this is the most effective way of learning a new programming language, but it should hopefully be good enough for starters. Will then have to figure out a way to become fluent in C++.

The End is Nigh.

Well not for another 7.6 billion years. That leaves quiet a bit of time to pack don't you think?
It's odd to wonder what will happen in the next million years. Will humans still exist? Will we have emigrated to other planets? Will we have come into to contact with new species, life on other planets? What will future humans think of their old ancestors as they dig deep into the ground, querying for information about civilizations lost? Part of me can just imagine people digging up some of our current inventions, perplexed looks on their faces trying to make heads or tails of what they have found. Or perhaps everything will be stored in museums [[or come up on their episodes of Antiques Roadshow -Hugin]], catalogued with long-winded explanations on how this gadget was used, why it was invented and if we really needed it. Maybe others will just be tagged with the word 'kitsch'.
Odd strange curious thoughts that have probably plagued us for ages, and will probably always will, but it is also the stuff that has made great fodder for imaginations. That has contributed to many an author's book and many an inventors creations. As for me, it will probably just keeps me up nights as I contemplate on what will be, what has been and how the heck I will be able to see it all.

Done, done... Not done. Glanced at, left for tomorrow

Though the intentions were there, the day has seemingly passed into oblivion, and as stated below most tasks on the list have gone unaccomplished. Perhaps will have more energy tomorrow and will be able to get more done. Am hoping that this will be the case before the daily grind of being back at school and working will go into full effect. I think I am now going to go and pass out on the couch fulfilling the role of the mindless blob I have become... Nite nite.

Posted by munin at 06:51 PM | Comments (0)

Is that the time?

How can that be the time?
How the heck did that happen? One moment it was 1:00 and I was cleaning out my files and the next thing I know, it's 4:00 o'clock and I haven't gotten nearly as much done as I hope I would. Zoiks. At least most of the laundry has been done which means I should have something to wear tomorrow, as for finding the bed, perhaps the clothes will add to the sleeping experience. Am not quiet sure about the zippers, but perhaps we shall give it a whirl.

Bills, Bills and More Bills

It's amazing how many bills come in during the first weeks of January. More then any other months it seems. Invoices for subscriptions, annual bills, regular bills, bills for prezzies and the list goes on and on. But then perhaps it is just me, maybe I am the only one who lands up signing up for stuff right after the holidays...

Much to do today:
Pay bills
Organize room [i.e. remove all the laundry from the floor, fold clean washing] - ooh a floor we have, unfortunatly the rest of the room is still a mess.
Do laundry [whites, darks and linens] - halfway there!
Empty out some more boxes from move [they have been sitting here for 6 months] - they seem to be comfortable, perhaps we should not disturb 'em.
Organize office - this is going to be postponed until the morrow as I do no have the energy or the will to tackle the mound of papers and boxes that are the current residents of our office.
Find notebooks - notebooks? what notebooks? we have notebooks?
Work on CV, write new cover letter - yet another tasks pushed back until tomorrow, must get this done soon.
Dig bed out from mound of now clean laundry...

But first I am in need of some fortification, Coffee. Must have me morning coffee

x-coountry skiing

Went skiing today, fell flat on face, had a blast! Am thinking of doing it again next weekend when my body forgives me the pain I have just put it through. Downhill on x-country skis is a lot of fun.

In other news...
Hugin is currently comparing bread knives online, hmm... perhaps this is not the right time to ask him to ask him to do the dishes [impish wink]

Neil Gaiman's New Years wish

'... so this is by way of being a New Year's greeting to all of you out there who read this. May your 2002 be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't to forget make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in 2002, you surprise yourself.'

There is something in it that rings so true. I like, I like very much. Might become a motto of sorts ' ...live as only you can... somewhere in 2002 ... surprise yourself'

Holiday in a Nutshell

Achoo! Ow! I think that would sum it up, well mostly.
As previously blogged I landed up with the flu on Christmas Eve. It was all very odd, had spent most of the day completing the chore list and then it was finally time to put up the tree. This endeavor took the three of us, one to hold the tree up, one to hold the stand and the other to guide the tree into place. The three of us are Hugin, one of our flatmates and meself. The other flatmate had since departed on his mad Christmas dash, a 16-hour roundtrip drive visiting 5 households. Once that was done all I could do was curl up in an armchair and watch our flatmate put up the décor, with an occasionally attempt at banter to keep him entertained. After that I crawled miserably onto the couch to snuggle up to Hugin and pass out. I think I might have been running a temperature at this point but am not too sure. Christmas day passed in a delirious blur, again spent most of the day passed out on the couch much to the bemusement of our wonderful guest who had dropped by for brunch. My sincerest thanks to our wonderful flatmate and my beloved for prepping brunch, baking the croissants [which were originally my tasks] and making a scrumptious meal. Next it was time for coffee, tea for me, and we spent the next several hours watching the DVD's that we got as presents. Shrek was a hoot, well the parts of it that I saw and Terminator, well I didn't really get to see that one. When I was finally coherent, I believe it was around 6ish, Christmas dinner had been made, consisting of turkey, mashed potatoes with garlic, salad [wait I am not too sure there was salad], stuffing, veggies and wine, again much thanks to Hugin and our flatmate for this yummy feast. It was then time to open the rest of the gifts, which were happy making indeed. The box that my dad sends for Christmas was a hoot. It is usually filled with stocking stuffers. This year's box contained a full set of Winnie the Pooh characters dressed as caroling angels [bemused smile] an umbrella and other assortments of fun stuff.

The next few days between Christmas and New Year's Eve where spent in bed, on the couch in various stages of sleep, occasionally in front of the computer and in the company of dear friends. Hugin spent part of it abed as he managed to pull his back, which made moving about quiet painful. An occasional attempt was made at moving him from the bed to ze couch. Went out for Chinese food on one of those nights which resulted in my fever coming back, but it was worth it as the food was quiet delish. New Years Eve was spent at home in the company of close friends who came over. All in all it was a wonderful holiday, even though we both landed up being sick. What made it wonderful was the ability to spend it with each other and those we hold dear.

Well that was the holidays in a nutshell, a rather large nutshell. ;)

A note of warning

Do not under any circumstances walk into the kitchen in the middle of the night when your tummy is all grumbly and proceed to eat cold greasy fries [though they are yummy] and Feta cheese. They will keep you up for hours. Oy, [rubbing churning tummy] time to make some mint tea.

The Friday Five.

In order to add a little more oomph to this here blog I have decided to join Heather's Friday Five. Have been reading others and have found them to be fun, so instead of hiding out in the shadows am now joining the fray. [We shall see how long this lasts as I am prone to procrastinating, but am hoping for the best] And away we go!

1. You've just won a complete collection of movies starring one actor- what actor would you pick? That's a tough one as I enjoy watching many actors in various types of movies. I guess is I had to pick one it would have to be Judy Dench. I have always enjoyed the movies she has been in, especially Chocolat and Mrs. Brown.

2. What was the last movie you saw in a theater? Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Very good movie, visually stunning greatly recommended. Has made me want to reread the books.

3. What was the last video or DVD that you bought? Haven't bought any in a long while, but received Shrek for Christmas. Does that count?

4. What movie could you watch over and over again and not get sick of? There are so many to choose from so narrowing it down to one would be very hard. The main ones would be: Chocolat, The Saint, Addicted to Love, French Kiss, In and Out, The Usual Suspects, Mulan, The Matrix and the list can go on.

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend?
With Hugin, relaxing, playing games, watching movies and hopefully taking a walk or two.

Odd nighttime images.

Strange dreams last night, dreamt that we [Hugin and myself] lived on island with two Orcas [Killer whales if you please] who hibernated in the winter and came out to play with us in the spring. The dream then shifted to me lecturing in a small-enclosed classroom. The lecture was on how to use a NC Milling machine, the students were several of our close friends, one who got in trouble for not paying attention and Hugin kept pointing out all the things I missed. Very odd, I wonder what it all means.

Also woke up to no blankets and a shivering Hugin. It seems that I fought him off during the course of the night, grabbed the blankets in a 'death grip', as he put it, and yanked the blankets away. [sheepish look] Hadn't meant to do that. Must be because we switched sides of the bed, yup that's it, must be that. [An abashed Munin]

Lights!

Have recently purchased an 'itty bitty book light', which now allows one of us to sleep while the other reads.[happy smile] This is a godsend as the ceiling lamp is very bright, as Hugin put it can be used for landing space shuttles, and we both so do enjoy snuggling up in bed and reading.

However, as the subject of light came up, and the hour was late, my brain started a churning and a questioning. We know that the average lightbulb will last a couple of months, unless of course one uses the wrong wattage and poof! Neon light lasts longer and so do some incandescent lamps, but what sort of light bulbs to the use for radio towers and lighthouses?

It was said that Edison designed a light bulb that would last for years. [He did this by using a carbonized bamboo filament, though the light that is produced is not very strong or very white, tungsten is used nowadays] I believe that there is currently one in his home that has been on for over 70 years, though this can all be conjecture. This of course would not do in an industrial nation, I mean you would go out of business rather quickly if you sold a handful of lightbulbs every year or so. Though it would be so sweet if you did not have to change the lightbulb every couple of months and would be quiet a relief for those of us who are short and live in high ceiling apartments. So back to the question of lighthouses and radio towers, what lightbulbs do they use?

So this answers that question, some lighthouses use 3 amp light bulbs, which are very similar to car lights, somehow that worries me a bit. Others [source] use 1000-watt lightbulbs, that feels a little better.
[If you are curious, here are a few more interesting facts about lighthouses]

Enough!!!

All right the snow was wonderful for Christmas, but enough is enough, could we please have some warm weather now. Don't get me wrong I love walking in the snow, especially late at night, when the snow is fresh and the lights make it seem as if the streets are scattered with diamonds. I just hate having to tug on the long underwear, the extra socks, the scarves, the warm woolen sweater, gloves/mittens, boots, hat and the long coat. I just takes too long getting out the door, which leaves me with a grumpiness and a feeling that instead of waddling about the streets I could just stay at home and stare out the window. This bout of grumpiness has come about due to an inability to grasp a hot mug of coffee in mittened hands, which resulted in me scalding my fingertips through the mittens.A slide down the stairs that could have been fun had it not been fraught with the prospect of landing face first onto a slate walkway, and a sharp poke in the eye as I attempted to re-adjust my scarf.

Maybe it will snow again tonight and be all lovely and bright. Perhaps that will restore my mood and faith that though winter lasts 4 months, it is really not that bad.

Spring Cleaning.

A silly concoction of links that I have collected over the past few months and am now storing here for prosperity. Most of them have passed into obscurity on my bookmarks, as I have not visited them for a long while.

Butterball anyone? - A good guide for cooking turkeys, recipes and stuffing [ or as some people would prefer to call 'em dressing]
All Recipes - Another site for finding recipes. Good place for finding numerous recipes on various dishes.
Martha Stewarts' page for snagging recipes and other helpful tips for around the house.

I am Locutus - An online cyborg name generator.
[I am also a geek it would seem, pluckings from Star Trek knowledge]
Hmm. Lets see... ooh
Munin = Machine Used for Nocturnal Infiltration and Nullification
Hugin = Humanoid Used for Galactic Infiltration and Nullification

Bored are we?A whole slew of online test for those long moments that seem to happen in a day.

Why exactly did I pick this one up. I must have been delirious at the time, I can't think of any other reason for it - Create a fart.

Had a whole spiel about this one, hmm maybe I'll post it later even though the segway has been debated to death.

This was just a hoot, it made me laugh and laugh and laugh. [Thanks to Christine for this link]

A great place to pick up games read up on new installments and just generally pass time when there is nothing else to do. With good recommendations, may I present the Underdogs.

Nummy, chocolate, a site for those like me who love our chocolate, and enjoy doing things with it too [thanks to Spitfire for the link]

Something I came across recently after watching a show. The discovery channels web page. A great place for learning.

That's it for now. Perhaps some more another day.
