So it seems that I need a tux.
I am intrigued at the prospect but somewhat daunted by:
a) $$$
b) where to go to get one
c) did I mention $$$?
d) have to decide upon lapel style
e) see a) and c)
If any tuxedos from Montreal are reading this blog, please leave me a comment...

Yep, that's a link.

Hmm. Hmm.
Would advise haunting the thrift shops, if possible. Decent tux is $$$, renting is probably not an option, and also $$$ because of the time factor - longer you keep it, more it costs.
Thought - could you rent when you arrive "on location"? (I'm thinking o'seas here...)
Ooh - what colour? Black was an assumption. Anything else would almost certainly be rentally advisable.
Don't imagine you would have need for a tux too often, so purchase is probably not cost-effective.
Unless, of course, you are thinking of joining the Masonic. (Joke - or is it?) Then - possibly.
Too bad mine don't fit.
This is for non o'seas use... at least at first.
Not sure what Montreal actually has in terms of good thrift shops.
Plus anything I found in a thrift shop would require me to know a tailor... which I do not.
Not good.
So it might end up being the $$$ and looking around to see which of the places in the previous link (thanks guruvious) is the best ratio of $$$/quality.
Posted by: Hugin on Enero 20, 2005 04:55 PMumm. actually you do kind of know a tailor...
Posted by: munin on Enero 20, 2005 07:13 PM"All suits are the same - it's the fit that makes the difference." (my jerk ex-boss at TipTop.
But I'll give him this - he KNEW the business.
The fit after the fact is the major part of the tux. Far, far better a mediocre tux that is well fitted (by a tailor) than a good tux that you buy off the rack.
So - look for a tux that fits on the shoulders (outer shoulder seams on the edge of the shoulders) and is long enough in the arms, and Fits around the chest. And the pants are long enough. Then take it to a tailor and get it adjusted. It's the best investment in the final result.
Oh yeah - it should be comfortable when you put it on the first time. And I mean comfortable.
Anything else - shortening of sleeves, hemming of pants, trimming of jacket seams, trimming of seat on the pants, adjusting the waist, trimming of pant legs, adjusting the width of the pant-leg hem, almost anything, can be done afterwards.
Best deal is pay less for the tux, get the tailoring done right. (eg - hemming pants $8.00, waist and seat adjusting $14.00, trimming of jacket $16.00)
Try looking for the equivalent of a size 38. (Don't remember what that is in tux sizes)
