From the time I plugged an unprotected PC directly to the internet (via cable modem) to the time someone had taken control of it from the outside was 3 hours.
In 3 hours they found the IP, installed a program on it that allowed them control and were moving the mouse around.
Pretty impressive for a malicious entity - they were in the add-remove programs menu when we pulled the plug.
Just goes to show the value of a good firewall, as they wouldn't have been able to do this with a firewall installed properly. The firewall would have queried the use of the software and until someone actually on the PC said YES, it wouldn't have been able to communicate.
It's a good reminder.
