I currently desire to express my inner Cary Grant.
What does this mean?
Well, I need to get properly attired for any real kind of event. Heck, I need to be able to just get dressed up once and a while.
Actual requirements:
jacket
pants (have one nice pair, one from an older suit)
suit (yup, gotta get one)
shirts (have only one ok one, had two but that other one got wrecked in the wash)
tie (have a few, but would be good to have more options)
I got some shoes just yesterday, my old ones pinched the toes a little.
Anyways, shopping and learning.
Can't believe I'm reading Queer Eye tips...... but don't think Cary Grant wrote a book on style.
But I'll leave with something he did say:
‘Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.’
– Cary Grant
Funny you should say... I've never seen this movie, but your Cary Grant cravings reminded me of all the good things I'd heard about it:

The main character is an aspiring film-maker, and a big fan of old Cary Grant movies. He is living in the UK when his mother calls him home so she can set him up with an arranged marriage. Trouble is, he's gay, and he's already living with someone.
Trying to sort things out, the main character asks himself, "well, how would Cary Grant (the epitome of suave) deal with this?" And pretty soon there are fantasy scenes of himself and Cary Grant holding conversations...
Posted by: ed 'hat on Diciembre 6, 2004 12:45 PM2-button grey/charcoal suit, white cotton barrel-cuff shirt, silk tie (half-Windsor knot) - what's not to like?
Posted by: dad on Diciembre 6, 2004 12:53 PMI do like Cary Grant, suave but also in a lot of films just seemed to have fun.
More modern day, I'd have to say Chow Yun Fat in a suit...
Dad,
Seems a little monochromatic...
Maybe some colour in the shirt or something... and the tie might have to use a full windsor depending upon with collar spread.
Heh. Can't believe I'm discussing this...
Granted a white shirt is good, but perhaps too traditional. Even for events such a weddings.
Then again, not sure I can see a navy suit... hmm.
Posted by: hugin on Diciembre 6, 2004 07:20 PMFull Windsor might be too heavy (aka big) a knot. Depends on the thickness of the fabric in the tie. 4-in-jand doesn't work well no silk - slips too easily and looks sloppy. Half-Windsor is a little more classic, not so obvious. Also depends on the collar spread of the lapels on the shirt.
BTW - everyone should have a white shirt. So there.
OTOH, you could wear colours fairly well. Just not for a first one-size-fits-all-ocassions shirt.
