I used to think George Lucas was a pretty cool guy, for his vision in creating Star Wars and other stuff including the fact that he adopted children.
But then came Episode 1 and I had to wonder what was going on with him.
Now comes the DVD release and I am sure he isn't well.
Certainly he admits to not caring what the fans think about his changes.
First he released it now and not after Episode 3 because, "A lot of people are getting very worried about piracy. That has really eaten dramatically into the sales."
I have to laugh. Star Wars as it was would get huge sales if he released it three years from now; piracy or not.
Sales are down because you released a couple of lousy movies under the Star Wars name and a lot of the older fans are sick of them and myself for example refuse to watch the nonsense.
Why couldn't he release the originals on DVD?
"To me, the special edition ones are the films I wanted to make."
"...[the original] it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be."
So in 1977 he wanted Greedo to shoot first and didn't have the tech to do that until later? Uh-huh.
He wanted to replace Anakin's ghost we see at the end of Jedi with the guy from Episodes 1-3, who shall intentionally remain nameless.
I can see wanting the bigger FX and set FX, but really some of the changes are just window dressing.
[More Changes: New Hope, Empire and Jedi.]
Not that we won't see another change later... I mean I have to ask, if he changes Anakin at the end of Jedi to the younger guy, why not change Alec Guiness to Ewan McGregor?
Don't like it, won't buy it and no doubt it will all be chalked up to `piracy' by someone somewhere.
Edit: Penny Arcade says it well.
Posted by hugin at Septiembre 22, 2004 11:34 AMAh...I'm so glad I have the originals on VHS. Now all I have to do is figure out how to transfer them to DVD. I'm pretty sure I've got the gear...
Posted by: steve on Septiembre 27, 2004 01:45 PMHmm, tricky; you probably need to have a video capture card. Don't think a regular video card would do. At that point just find something to record the signal and then just send to dvd. Maybe.
But probably stuff online that says how.
... of course there is stuff online that tells you how to communicate with aliens.
