I can't believe I forgot to press Save again.
Something about that Logout button that compels me to press it instead of pressing Save first. Alas, there goes my last entry. I am compelled to write again.
Spiderman 2. Better than the first one in some ways, just as good in others and basically quite good. I hope the powers that be use this as an continuing example of how to produce a comic book movie and its sequels.
On the topic of movies, I've been reading articles quoting a study in which 1 in 4 people are pirating movies from the internet. Being one of those individuals, I must laugh at the suggested reasons and impact on my movie habits.
I download movies that I am not willing to spend full price on in the theatre, because the prices in the theatre are so high. If they were lower, it wouldn't be as big a reason because it would be worth it.
That's the critical part, `worth'.
Movies that appear worth the time and expense, we go out and see. Even if they are cheesy movies. Certainly while Spiderman 2 was good, I wouldn't call Chronicles of Riddick anything but cheese. We still went to see it and enjoyed it. Of course I downloaded Pitch Black; I hadn't seen it and we don't rent movies due to our difficulty in returning them on time. Then I deleted it.
We own both extended editions of Lord of the Rings that have been released. Of course, before they released the extended edition, I downloaded the movie in order to watch it again. We weren't about to purchase the theatrical version, and after that I deleted it.
There are also occasions when I might like a movie so we download it and watch it. If it's good and we liked it, we'll go get it; Catch Me if You Can, Cast Away, for example.
Some movies are difficult to find, especially foreign films in the original language. So, I have copies of a few HK movies; if I could find them for a reasonable amount I'd also buy them.
If what is being said is that I should be spending more money on lousy movies, they should also start complaining that movie reviewers are cutting into their profits and get them stopped as well.
Come to think of it, I also dl TV shows and watch them. Mainly because either I missed episodes, or don't have cable. I missed a lot of the West Wing and so caught up on the episodes by downloading them, watched the show faithfully until Aaron Sorkin left. I watched the latest season of Enterprise, downloaded, because I don't have cable.
I could just get cable, but it's too expensive for what you get, and quite honestly there are only maybe 4 shows we would watch. Not worth it.
It's all about that return on investment.
Posted by hugin at Julio 13, 2004 12:09 PMok, I want to know how to download tv shows I've missed...!
Posted by: Amber on Julio 13, 2004 03:05 PMWell, first it depends upon the show. Some are simply more likely to be available than others. For example, I am catching up on the O.C. but haven't been able to get hold of the most recent episodes of Queer Eye.
After that it's a question of using a combination of DC++, Shareaza, Kazaa to find the object of your ocular affection and then wait.
Rinse, repeat.
Anything in particular?
Posted by: Hugin on Julio 13, 2004 04:40 PMPretty good statement of things for videos. Is it true also for music, or is that a different case because music stuff is much sahorter, and easier to keep?
Posted by: dad on Julio 13, 2004 04:59 PMWell, music IMO is tougher.
As there is even less incentive to purchase cds.
With a movie you are getting basically an entire entity which interests you. Sure maybe some part of the movie you could have done without, but basically you are getting exactly what you want.
With cds you are spending, in some cases, as much or more than a dvd; but you don't necessarily want it all.
I can think of many cds where I was only interested in a couple songs, and the rest really didn't interest me.
All in all, cds are also less enjoyable to listen to now that personal compilations are so easily made. None of the whole `making a tape' from various recordings into a single enjoyable listening experience. Now just grab a bunch of mp3s, shuffle them together and play. It's great, it doesn't get repetitive and it's easy.
This is part of the reason the whole ipod/itunes etc are so popular.
And why there is more of a problem for the music industry. Not saying that they should be suing people, I'm saying they need to find another way to distribute their music that fits what consumers want.
Posted by: Hugin on Julio 13, 2004 10:21 PMWe own an awful lot of cds, and often if I enjoy a few songs I will purchase the cd, even if I do have mp3s lying around. I totally agree with you though, with a cd you're often paying for things you don't want. It's time to find another way to distribute music.
West Wing and Gilmore Girls is what I'm really interested in :). I had the free version of Kazaa for a while, but the spyware was too annoying. I should probably pay for it and skip the ad crap.
Posted by: Amber on Julio 14, 2004 10:25 PMAmber - No!
Don't do it.
There are other P2P software choices out there and if you are truly interested in sticking with Kazaa (which is fine for some stuff and not so good for others) I can send you a copy/link of/for Kazaa Lite. Which is the version that was released by third parties and eliminates the ads; it also allows for continuous searches etc.
ah, ok. I have no real loyalty, it was basically the only one I knew. Suggestions?
Posted by: Amber on Julio 15, 2004 09:48 PMWell, if you want to stay with basically the same format I suggest you get Kazaa Lite. Not generally available, but... if you do a search in Kazaa for Kazaa lite you should find it. Version 2.4.3 basically the one with the huge number of downloads available for it.
