The morning commute sees me slumped in a chair in the corner of the bus/subway, a ball of half woken uncaffeinated grumpiness, eyes barely open watching the commuters get on and off. Listening to their music that is played too loudly on headsets, perusing their morning papers, catching a word there, and a phrase here; an onslaught of incomprehensible media. Noting who relinquishes their seat and who guards it possessively. An hypothesis begins to form in the recesses of my mind. Women are more likely to give up their seat then men. The question is then posed: ‘Why is it the women are more likely to offer their seat to others, while men will feign ignorance, guarding their seat by sulking, brooding and pouting if any one comes near?’

Because they are the weaker sex. They need to sit down. We're strong. We can stand.

Posted by: GeekGrrl on Abril 1, 2003 10:08 AMWe like our goodies.
We like to be comfortable.
We get unhappy when we don't have them.
Women have to put up with that.
Therefore more giving :D
My precious!

They always hold doors, let you in the elevator first, etc. Men who are probably never going to climb the corporate ladder aren't.
I've never took note of the woman though. Maybe I should :)!

Both J and I here at home have observed exactly the opposite - men are more polite generally, and more likely to be considerate in a public setting.

Maybe it just the young upstarts with whom I share the morning commute, who greedily claim their chairs, never relinquishing them to dame, babe or the elderly.
I have noticed that the men who are higher on the echelon seem to be more considerate and chivalrous, but I am not sure if it is because they are more educated or are from a different era. It's hard to say.
There are some mornings when I want to grab one of those younglings by the ear and haul them out of their chair admonishing them for the unseemly behaviour.
Geekgrrl, *snort guffaw* yes, that must be it!
