time

Went out for coffee with my mom today and as we approached the café we noticed a group of people standing around an old women who had just been hit by a car. She was conscious and breathing. Seemed to be alert, though she was bleeding. I used to work as a lifeguard when I was younger, and I use to keep all my certifications up to date, but in the past few years have let them slide. I was standing there with the rest of the people wondering what to do, trying to remember how to treat for shock, racking my mind for the things I should be checking for and cursing myself for having left my gloves and small first aid kit that I usually carry with me at home. Luckily a women arrived a few moments later, she was a doctor. The first thing she did was check for a pulse and began monitoring the women’s vital signs. I had completely forgotten to do that. I am so thankful that the doctor showed up, and I praying that the elderly lady is going be ok and has only suffered some mild bumps and bruises.

However, I think it is time for me to go back to ‘school’ and get my certifications, so this spring I am planning on taking one of these courses, or at least getting my CPR and First Aid updated.

I forgot to mention: The driver did not flee the scene. He called the police and stayed to make sure that the women was going to be ok.

I was wondering the same thing, Nikki. [about the driver stopping]

And I hope that she is okay. I once saw a young girl get hit by a car. I hope your day was okay after that; I PTSDed it for quite some time, actually.

oops, sorry about that.
Yes the driver did stop. He stuck around, called the police and made sure that the women was going to be ok.

[added it into the top]

Sue *hugs*
I was lucky enough not to see the accident, and though she was bleeding there was no massive external injury... so the shock factor was less. I have witnessed accidents while lifeguarding, my body would kick in so much adrenalin and I would just react to the situation, but afterward I use to shake like a leaf.

Nikki, they are good to have. You never know when you might need them and you hope that you never have to use them.
